Sometimes a rollerski on a nice Saturday just doesn’t cut it. After some so-so classic rollerski intervals on Friday, getting something a little different seemed in order. A trip around the Mint-Bomber traverse seemed like a perfect opportunity to get back in the mental game. Plus I hadn’t done it before and Andrew didn’t have any commitments. Time to get the spikes and ice ax out.
We headed out the Mint trailhead running as far up the valley as we could. Then swung in for a snack break at the Mint Hut and up into Backdoor Gap. From there it was 2 glaciers, some playing around on the old bomber, and a bit of scree before we got back onto the civilized Reed lakes trail. The weather wasn’t quite happy enough for a swim in the lake though.
Initially the thought was we could bike the 3-4 mile shuttle. That plan quickly degenerated as it seemed like too much of a hassle to set up and bring all the gear. Running and bushwacking a shortcut were in order instead. So 6 hours after leaving the trailhead, that’s what we did. It wasn’t even too bad of a bushwack.
